Pedestals Are The Right Way To Install Conventional Decking Over Roof Membranes

Pedestal roof deck supports are the proper way to build with conventional decking over a roof membrane. Eterno supports with the Wood-Joist Adapter allow a 2×4 to lay flat over the supports so that decking may be fastened to it. Any decking can be used with this system. Screws, hidden fasteners or plugs may all be used to fasten to the 2×4. A special aluminum T-Slot joist with accompanying clips are optional.
Pedestals take the place of all forms of sleeper joists. No more taper-cutting 2x down to a finite point along with the dubious question of fasteners. Solid wood joists laid on membrane or coating can cause stresses and compromise waterproofness. Pedestals are designed to evenly distribute weight without pinch points or abrasion potential.

When your tools include pedestal systems the challenges of modern architecture become opportunities. Pedestals make negotiating roof decks and other challenges easy and more importantly, they become the highlights of the build. The illustration to the left shows Eterno PR series pedestals with tile heads supporting porcelain pavers. Fascia support brackets are used to complete the design with a high level of fit, finish, and cohesive design.

Adjustable Height Pedestals

Star T base

The Star T is the shortest height-adjustable base in the range. It will adjust between 3/8″ and 9/16″.  You can combine a Star T with Star B shims to cover heights up to where you can transition to SE0 pedestals. The Star T is not a slope-compensating base but, multiple slope compensation shims are available to do so.
Generally, we recommend a design that allows for at least 1 1/8″ height as the smallest lift in the deck for drainage, mechanical system access and, ease of installation. When that isn’t possible though, Star T and the fixed height bases are the solution.

SE0 Pedestal

The SE0 is the smallest of the height-adjustable and slope-compensating pedestals. This base works with both tile heads and wood joist adapters. The SE0 is from the previous version of Eterno pedestals but, we have found value in its ability to dip down a little deeper than the PR1. The SE0 can handle slopes up to 5 degrees, more with slope compensation shims.

PR1 Pedestal

If the design and site conditions allow for it, the PR1 is where we prefer to start a pedestal specification. With an adjustment range of 1.2″ to 2.55″ what is typically the time-consuming portion of an install becomes far easier. The double screw body of the PR series offers twice the adjustment range of other systems and has the ubiquitous 5 degree slope compensation built-in. If you are an architect or specifier you will score points and strengthen relationships contractors and clients by choosing Eterno PR series. If you are a home-owner or contractor, these are the pain-free way of executing your installation.

PR2 Pedestal

The PR2 pedestal is the mainstay of the system. With an adjustment range of 2.55″ to 6.1″ this pedestal is the most used in the range. Often times an entire project can be done with only PR2 pedestals. This is a 5 degree slope-compensating unit with a load bearing in excess of 2000 pounds per pedestal. This pedestal supports all head options and fascia installation brackets. We sell these often for use with ipe tiles and the tile connection pins but, they also work with concrete, porcelain or joist options for conventional decking.

PR3 Pedestal

This is the big one. A massive adjustment range of 6.1″ to 16″ makes this the work horse of higher installations. The increased diameter of the PR series allows for un-braced heights previously unheard. Combine a PR3 with up to three extensions for a maximum height of 37″.

This video shows a roof deck installation with ceramic tiles. The same method would be used with concrete pavers. If ipe tiles are used you simply add the retention pins to hold the relatively lighter ipe tiles in place. In all cases if high wind resistance is a factor, not so in the Seattle area, lock down washers can be used to hold ipe tiles onto the pedestals. This would only be for hurricane-force winds and would be specified in your local building codes.
